Greenpeace criticizes companies working with bitcoins

The largest international environmental organization has officially opposed the original bitcoin mining method, suggesting that the network is moving to a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism.

Greenpeace has criticized the position of companies, one way or another connected with mining and distribution of bitcoins for their stance on climate change. According to environmentalists, most cryptocurrency companies working with BTC simply refuse to acknowledge the existence of a global climate change problem.

“At the moment, bitcoin is in danger of falling seriously behind the entire industry as other participants work to avert the climate crisis. While some companies are trying to modernize their approach by making changes to the way they mine and store crypto assets, bitcoin mining is getting dirtier - coal is still the main source of electricity, says Rolf Skar, spokesman for Greenpeace).

Greenpeace advocates changing the fundamental principle of the Bitcoin network, proposing to change the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). The initiative is called "Change the Code, Not the Climate" and has already been supported by the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Earlier, the analytical company Glassnode published a report from which it follows that the cost of the first cryptocurrency is now more than 76% lower than the historical maximum recorded on November 10, 2021.
